Elementary Years

Buyong Elementary School, At 6 years old I was enrolled in grade one at Buyong Elementary School. Where at walking distance lies the beautiful tourist spot and beach resort of Mactan Island. Tambuli beach resort, Tambuli Bella and Cebu Beach Club, Costabella, Blue water and White Sand are all just a few minutes walk ,where you can see in the streets tourist from different parts of the world are passing by. They love walking than take a ride. The boom of tourism really helps a lot in the local schools and students. At Buyong there were group of tourist headed by Paul who recruit interested students to continue their studies until college with the group expense. In short non academic scholars. With their help there were a lot of students were able to pursue there dreams at due time. Except of a few who disregard the essence to education in their lives.

First Day of Class, I cried cause my classmates are having fun of my unsharpened pencil. I get strange of the babies around me. Its my first time to meet them. I was used to be with my cousins at home, playing, swimming, etc. And then I felt something serious things are happening. There were instructions from our teacher Mrs. Daclan where every body still are strange thing for us.

First Flag Ceremony , I wander why our teacher want us to pull in line together with other students. Grade six students were always assigned to pull up the flag as our National Anthem is sung. Everything seems strange to me. I don’t even sung cause I don’t know how would it be sung. Then there goes the Panunumpa sa Watawat, then later on we have a few exercise.

Gardening after flag , really, do I have to do gardening before classes start? No arguments, everybody has to do gardening at the first period.

Group Reading , then a few months later as I was used to understand that I am studying. We are taught how to read books and I become the tutor of my classmates who were still not able to read. If you remember. It was Pepe and Pilar.

Recess Time, I remember I got only 25 cents for every break. A nearby sari sari store owned by an old lady named TECLA. With my 25 cents I can have 1 ice candy and all time favorite bahugbahug bread.

Playtime, We got a dangerous game but fun, we have kasing, and draw draw as we call. two group has 1 hard ball made of coconut leaves. Then you face each other holding the hard ball and hit your opponent. if one hits the other automatically the the other member has to replace him. If all members are hit then they are the loser. I remember my greatest opponent was Ambrosio Taghoy or “Bosiong”. He is slim an a hitman. Try the game and have fun.

Sketches at Classes, there goes the inborn artist, making sketch of the sacred heart of Jesus and the official picture of the late President Ferdinand Marcos. And sometimes I sketch the teacher secretly during classes but still I listen to the discussion. After class I show it to my classmates. They were amazed how did I do It.

Grade 2 till Gradefive, the same school routines but there were a lot of challenges coming in. As leaders in our school and class room I with my classmates Leny Igot and Amy Pinote were having responsibilities helping our teacher in different activities and works at school and class room. We are assigned helping our classmates who were slow readers by teaching them how to read and pronounce correctly the word. Then we put in the bulletin board their reading performance. If we have activities we are the one task to supervise the group in their respective task. I already handle responsibilities at school and feel like I am matured enough at very young age.

Here comes Michille Petit, together with his wife . They were from Michigan, USA looking for two students, a boy and a girl who were top ranking at school. They were at the Principal’s Office having discussion with our beloved Principal, Mrs. Aro. Our principal love me very much cause they also don’t have siblings. She even hog me every time she saw me in school. Later on their discussion, I and Amy were called at principal’s office because we were chossen to be the two students to study in a catholic school. And we were glad that they would do the sponsorship till college and if its okey with our parents. We will be working at Michigan ,USA after college.

SAINT ALPHONSUS CATHOLIC SCHOOL, everything was arrange by our beloved principal Mrs. Aro together with the President of the Catholic Womens League at Lapu-Lapu Parish Church, Mrs. Pozon. At grade six I was enrolled at Saint Alphonsus Catholic School Elementary Dep’t. just adjacent to the high school department.

Mrs Aro or Mrs Pozon, I was made to choose were should I stay if classes starts . But my mother refuse neither of them. I stay at Linda beauty shop, my relative business just a few walk from the church. I stay there with my brod, Oligario Paquibot, he is at first year and a scholar. He finish ECE and at present connected with one of MEPZA company.

First day in class, I go to school by myself and not familiar with the place I just memorized how many corners did I pass and direction on the way to school so that I could go home with no problems after class.

Break time, Oh its break time, my classmates are now eating their snacks brought by their moms. I have to take snacks also but I was surprise I don’t have the money in my pocket. I need to go home and get my pocket money. I rush and recall the direction going home. At last I was able to take my snacks, but as I go back classes had started. Slowly I get in and was not recognize. I did it when my teacher turn her back. She is Mrs Paclipan, my best teacher in SACS.

Activities, I realized in SACS as a Catholic Institution run by Priests and Nuns . There are activities which I mis so much and the people involve. Angelus is a daily prayer during school days. In October we have this Month of Rosary were in stage there were presentations or reenactment.

Graduation, In a catholic school before our graduation rite we have to attend a mass in the morning. Its a very solemn mass with your parents. Its great feeling if you graduate in a catholic school because you are intellectually and spiritually ready for the next phase of life you gonna go.
